Dear family and friends of Dan,

My name is Will Lederer and I work at Expanding Sky Studio in Brunswick. I got to know Dan while his band Slygo Road was recording their album with me here this past year. 

I wanted to share with you that in just the short time I got to spend with Dan, I grew incredibly fond of him. He had an amazing energy and was just so excited about the entire process of making the album. He was so talented, and his joy and passion for the music (and life in general) was just mindblowing. One of the best things about my job is the people that I get to meet, and Dan was one of the very best.

I can't imagine how hard this time must be for you to lose Dan so suddenly, but I'm sure you know what an utterly wonderful person he was. I will miss him so much, as I know we all will.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish you much courage as you now face a new reality without Daniel.  I am sincerely sorry for your great loss and send my most sincere condolences.

The fact that you are gone is still a shock. I hold so many memories of you, my friend, from the years we grew up together in Grand Isle. From kamikaze tobogganing down the coteau behind your barn, to riding 'la barligne' with John B. driving as we headed to the potato fields; from impromptu music jams in your living room, to the hometown parade and the Gong Show our senior year. I remember the snow sculptures, the band exchanges, and the trips to the Bangor and Augusta tournaments. The Class of 1980 was something special, and lifelong friendships were formed.

I was recently speaking with your sister Nicole at  Mme Laura’s M.'s funeral, and she shared that you and Nancy were doing well—that you were really enjoying your grandchildren, playing music, and that life was good. I was happy to hear about you.  Even though we didn’t see each other often as the years passed and our lives took different paths, it was always wonderful to run into you back home in the St. John Valley.

You will be deeply missed.

To Daniel’s family,

I was fortunate to have Daniel as my college roommate during my freshman year at Orono’s Bangor College Campus. For those of us who grew up in Northern Aroostook County, the world still felt big and unfamiliar—but Daniel brought a sense of home and comfort with him. His kindness, his sensitivity, and the easy warmth he shared made all the difference to me in those early days.

Everyone on our floor affectionately called him “Frenchie,” a nickname he wore with that familiar smile. I will always be grateful for the time we shared, and for the quiet, steady way he made life better just by being himself.

For the past four years, I had the privilege of being welcomed into Dan’s band El Malo and playing music with Dan every week. His positivity, enthusiasm and excitement was infectious, and I looked forward to getting to hang with him and play tunes he wrote and loved. Sharing a creative experience with someone so giving and welcoming has been one of my great joys of the past few years, and has buoyed me through my own grief and loss. 

Beyond music, Dan encouraged me in my running journey, and got me to enter my first road race with him.  We ran successive races, and he was always so happy when we’d meet up at the finish line. I went from being a casual runner to a daily runner because of Dan’s encouragement, and it’s impacted my life and my health in so many positive ways. 

I’m grateful for the short amount of time I got to be in Dan’s joyful presence. I’ll always remember him as laughing and smiling, encouraging everyone to do their best and have fun doing it, whether in music, fitness or any other area of life. My life is better for having known him, and I hope his family can take some peace in knowing how positively he affected everyone who got to know him even a little bit.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Dan was a great guy and talented musician. Many years ago he was a member of the Mick Roy Band and we had the best fun together. 

I was very privileged to have been asked by Dan to record his musical family many years ago. The highlights included his mom playing Ragtime piano, his sister singing Crazy, and Dan playing his saxophone with gleeful enjoyment. 

Dan will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Nancy and family.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Morrow family for the loss of such a beloved man. Daniel was a great family man, a hard worker, an extraordinary and talented musician, and for me, he was and always will be a great friend! I will always remember and cherish our time together. This past week I have taken a “Sentimental Journey” down memory lane remembering all of the great memories we had together during our elementary to high school years. Those were special times spent with great friendship, purest of all fun and so much laughter. The bond was huge and my life has had more meaning with Daniel in it. 

On behalf of the entire Dionne family, I want to send his family our sincere condolences and know that we will never forget what he has meant to all of us. At this time of the year, we hear you sing “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” - it remains close to our hearts.  We will always remember you Daniel and I hope the angels and acquaintances above will be enlightened by your warm heart, your super musical talent, and most of all great fun and laughter.
