Dan was born in Boise, Idaho to Clayton and Helen Dawson and always fondly cherished his childhood years there. In 1960, the family of all boys moved to Bakersfield where Dan graduated from Foothill High in 1966. He then served during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971 in the Air Force. Dan became a Sergeant and Crew Chief, specializing in aerospace jet propulsion and overseeing engines of massive B-52 bomber jets.
Shortly after being discharged, Dan met, as he liked to say, “the best decision I ever made” - his future wife, Cheryl. They married in 1973, and Dan decided to pursue teaching to spend as much time as possible with Cheryl, who taught Kindergarten at McKee Elementary during those years. He graduated from Bakersfield College and Fresno State with a teaching credential in the Industrial Arts, leading to a career teaching high school and adult automotive and woodshop programs.
Having lived a good life, Dan’s best memories were traveling with Cheryl on their many cruises and RV “adventures,” especially with their children or friends. The couple traveled to 49 states and 11 countries together! He enjoyed gardening, golf, working on cars and his home, as well as being an expert family handyman with endless “projects.” While he took great pride in his well-kept houses and vehicles, he was most proud of his children and their own successful careers in public education. Dan will be remembered for his helpful, teaching nature and sense of humor. He especially loved good jokes and making others laugh.
Preceding Dan in death were his parents, Clayton and Helen; eldest daughter, Kacie; and beloved Bichon, Bing. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cheryl; their children, Ashley and Matthew of Bakersfield; his brothers Jim of Houston, Texas and Rodney of Bakersfield. In his later years, Dan’s life became very physically and emotionally challenging. Though he otherwise had little in life to want for, the support of his family, and especially the unwavering devotion and care of Cheryl and Rodney, was Dan’s most valued possession.
Dan would have wanted to thank all of the kind and caring staff of Hoffman Hospice who brought comfort to him and invaluable support to he and Cheryl in his final months.
Per Dan’s wishes, there will be no services and he will be returned to Boise at a later date. The Dawson family invites you to please celebrate Dan’s memory in your own way with your
