Long-time resident of Frazier Park-Cuddy Valley Donald M. Eubank died on December 12, 2023. Don Eubank was born October 17, 1930 in Sacramento, California. Music was a big part of his life, and Don played his clarinet in many church orchestras over the years. One of Don’s earliest jobs was assembling bicycles for the Pasadena Sears and Roebuck store. Mechanically gifted, all of Don’s hobbies were about building something, fixing something, or some aspect of photography. Don took classes in clock repair; for many years he operated a “clock repair business” out of his basement—perhaps some of you reading this obituary own a clock that Don repaired.
After graduating from High School in 1947, Don began working as a photographer. Don learned how to use a panoramic camera for large group photos. Don connected the owner of the photography company with the Pasadena Foursquare Church youth camp leadership and in short order, Don was taking panoramic camp pictures at the Church youth camps.
In the summer of 1950, Don was at the youth camp to take a panoramic photo. At the camp, Don met a young lady named Verna Spencer. Verna was trying to take a picture of her friends, but she didn’t have the right film for her camera. Don volunteered to assist her, and taught Verna some techniques in using her camera. The next week, Don and Verna had their first date. On that date, Don proposed, and Don and Verna were married six months later, on December 17, 1950.
In 1960, a friend at Don’s church, who was a Captain for the LA County fire department, encouraged Don to consider becoming a fireman: “Several local cities are hiring, and you’ll love being a fireman—you’ll be great at it!” Don started working at the Buena Park Fire Department in 1961. Don was also trained as a paramedic, and later became an Engineer. Don often joked: “I had the best job in the world: I got to drive a firetruck, and they even paid me for doing it!” Throughout the years, Don and Verna hosted 27 foster children in their home, including Kurt Rauh, who the siblings consider a dear brother.
Don and Verna moved to Frazier Park-Cuddy Valley in 1988. Don attended the Frazier Park Community Foursquare Church regularly until the Covid Pandemic, when he also stopped driving. Don was a charter member of two Foursquare Churches in his lifetime: The Florence Avenue Foursquare Church, Santa Fe Springs, CA, and the Frazier Park Community Foursquare Church, chartered in 1994.
Don hosted the weekly “Yard Sale Show” on the cable network in Frazier Park for several years until the cable network equipment no longer supported local broadcasting. Don enjoyed writing articles and submitting pictures to the Mountain Enterprise, and participating in a range of community functions. No matter what event or activity, Don loved bringing his “signature broccoli salad” or apple cake. If you attend Don’s memorial service on March 2, you’ll have a chance to taste some of Don’s favorite recipes!
Don enjoyed good health until a couple months before his death. Don was pre-deceased by his parents James and Glenna, his two older brothers, Burle and Harland, and his wife, Verna, who died November 28, 2011. Don and Verna are survived by their five children: Spencer and wife Kathy, Donald and wife Jackie, Katie and husband Mark Bachand, Kurt Rauh and wife Debbie, and Michael. Don and Verna have ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
The memorial service celebrating Don’s life, followed by a reception is open to the community and will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Cuddy Hall, Lake of the Woods, 335 Lakewood Pl, Frazier Park, CA 93225.
