

Hazel Lorrain Jacobson was born to Carl and Ida (Ruste) Jacobson on May 16, 1924, in Winifred Lakes, South Dakota. She attended college in South Dakota and Minnesota where she received her teaching certificate and met her dear friends Francy Arvizu and Marlie Bowers. Along with her dear friends and her passion for teaching Hazel came to Arvin to teach school for the Arvin Union School District in 1949. Hazel taught school in South Dakota and Minnesota before trekking to California. She taught school for 48 years before retiring and becoming a life long member of the California Teacher's Association. In Arvin Hazel met and married the love of her life Joe L. James on February 16,1952. Together they raised 4 rambunctious children and many of the neighboring children. Everyone was welcomed into the sanctuary of her home where she made sure they were clean and well fed. Her family was the delight of her life. Large family gatherings at her home has left many with wonderful memories of this darling lady. She was a reserved, quiet person who always had a kind word and smile for even the most dispirited person. Hazel practiced great optimism and patience. Her contagious spirit lives on in all whom were touched by her love. She is survived by her son Michael and wife Christy, daughter Karen Menefee, son Ron and wife Julie all of Arvin; and son Randy and wife Mari of Glennville. Hazel's legacy also includes 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Hazel will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known this exceptional lady. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 29th, from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel at 2:00pm on Friday, March 30, 2012.
