

A resident of Bakersfield, California, W.T. passed at his home in Rosewood Retirement Community. He was born and raised in Marlow, Oklahoma and lived in Porterville, California for several years. W.T. was a baker for over 50 years, the last 30+ years as owner of Smith's Bakery Hillcrest on Niles St. After retirement, he continued to bake for friends and family. He also was an avid square dancer and was well known for his gardening skills. He was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theater as a Mess Sergeant. W.T.'s greatest joy in his later years was spending time with his family. He is survived by his sons: Danny (Nancy), Terry (Deanna), Garry (Joanne), and Rick (Maria). He had six grandchildren: Jennifer, Taryn, Nicole (J.R.), Brett (Liz), Heidi, and Katie (Steven) and three great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Jack, and Jordyn. He was preceded in death by his sons' mother, Manola Lucille Harkrider Garvin, and his second wife, Elizabeth Darleen Boone Garvin. W.T. kept his wonderful sense of humor to the end and was known by all for his generosity and kindness. Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday, December 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306. A viewing at Hillcrest is scheduled Friday, December 9, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to your favorite charity.
