Carol Lee (Bailey) Canavan-Rogge was born in Topeka, KS in June 1943 to Glen Bailey and Maxine Busey. Following divorce of her parents at an early age, Carol moved to Los Angeles and was raised by her maternal grandparents Vello and Grace Chase. Vello relocated his Los Angeles. barber shop to Wrightwood, CA and then to San Bernardino, CA. Carol attended Urbita Elementary School, Richardson Junior High School and graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1961. Her first job was at Johnson & Hastings Real Estate Appraisal. She married Michael Canavan in 1962 and raised three sons at loving homes in San Bernardino, Highland, and Newport Beach. She worked at San Bernardino High School and Pacific High School as an Instructional Tutor, San Bernardino Valley College admissions, and State Farm Insurance Company while maintaining a busy family home. She was a Cub Scout den mother, team mom, and PTA volunteer. Her family were parishioners of St Anne’s Catholic Church. Michael and Carol moved to Newport Beach, CA in 1988, where Carol worked for Imperial Savings & Loan. In 1991, Michael and Carol divorced. In 1992, Carol met Douglas Rogge of Long Beach, CA. Carol and Douglas had residences in Orange County, Santa Barbara, and Portland, OR. In 2003, Carol married Douglas, resided in Westminster, CA, and worked at Leisure World Pharmacy in Seal Beach, CA. Carol and Douglas retired and moved to Banning, CA. Carol was a parishioner of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church and active volunteer on the Lady’s Guild.
Carol had a loving and energetic social demeanor. She attended Tai chi classes to socialize. She loved to talk to everyone, had the “gift of gab” and would make life-long friendships fast and easy. Throughout her life, she maintained a busy calendar of social activities, birthdays, visits, and phone calls. She kept daily diaries and was infamous for sending handwritten letters, postcards, lengthy phone calls, and sending a Thank You card when she got a Thank You card. Her list of best friends was long but always began with her life-long friends - Elaine Cartwright and Judy McParland. She loved to travel everywhere including Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii.
Carol believed her father, Glen Bailey, had been killed-in-action during WWII. She met him for the first time in the mid 70’s. Visiting her father and meeting her half-brother, Ron, his wife Sharon, and their families, were a source of immeasurable love and joy. She most relished trips to Kansas to visit the Bailey family.
Carol enjoyed going to the movie theater and watching her favorite television shows, movies, and football. She loved watching the Los Angeles Rams and USC football games. By far, Lucielle Ball, I Love Lucy, and The Long, Long Trailer were her favorites. The only time she would not take a phone call was during the annual Academy Awards and Golden Globes awards shows. She loved hobnobbing with Hollywood personalities like Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dennis Quaid, Marisa Tomei, and Sean McNamara with her son Jeffrey.
Carol loved to drink coffee, cherished family recipes and welcomed every opportunity to cook for friends and family. She especially loved her daughter-in-law’s tamales. She treasured celebrating holidays, baking Christmas cookies and cinnamon rolls with her grandchildren and just spending time with them. One last cherished moment was dancing at her grandson’s wedding.
She was a doting, dedicated, and loving mother to her three sons. She bragged about each of their college graduations, careers, accomplishments, and relationships. She loved packing her suitcase for long weekend stays at each of their homes. The arrival of four grandchildren brought more visits and the creation of precious traditions with grandma that included cooking, watching movies, artwork, games, and reading. “G-Ma” was fun and adored by her grandchildren.
Carol passed away peacefully following a courageous two-year battle with dementia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen Bailey and Maxine Bussey, grandparents Vello and Grace Chase, her first husband Michael, dear friend David Croner, and husband Douglas. She is survived by her three sons, Jon (Lisa) of Poway, Jeffrey of Los Angeles, and Jason of Ventura, four grandchildren, Hayden (Kate), Chase, Grace and Madeleine, stepson Justin (Jessie) of Orange County and half-brother Ron (Sharon) of Topeka, KS.
