Thor was the second of seven children born to Sven Aage and Augusta Linderoth in Glynøre Denmark. He grew up near the sea and belonged to a Kayaking club. In a large competition in Finland Thor won the silver cup in his class. All Danes must serve in the military which Thor did in the Army. It was just after the end of the war that he was stationed in Germany and earned a gold medallion in marksmanship.
He began his apprenticeship as a baker in Roslev Denmark and after four years received his Journeyman certificate issued by the Royal Danish Ministry. As a baker in Copenhagen he had the honor of baking for the Queen. A bakery had to be specially designated to provide goods for Royalty and he made a unique pastry called Mariaboller for Queen Ingrid. Thor continued baking both as a career and personally until the age of 95 when he moved to The Lakes in an assisted living apartment. It was quite a change for him to be spoiled with housekeeping, laundry and meals prepared as he had continued doing all those things for himself until he moved. In fact, for his entire life he always baked his own bread including his daily lunch bread Danish rugbrod.
Thor was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Ella (Bojesen) Linderoth, while they lived in Highland Springs Village in Cherry Valley. He had taken up golf upon retirement from his long career in baking so the Village was the perfect fit for him after a time living up in Poppet Flats. Thor enjoyed the Men’s Golf Club at the Village and in the early days helped with the volunteers keeping the course in good shape and in the office. He also enjoyed his garden and roses and continued for some time traveling in his motorhome. He had always enjoyed the outdoor life both hunting and fishing. His dog Ladybug gave him joy and a purpose.
After some time in Canada, the family immigrated to the United States. In earlier days in California, Thor first worked in his brother Bill’s bakery (Linderoth’s Bakery) in Huntington Beach, California until 1966 when he started Thor’s Danish Bakery in Anaheim, California. He and Ella belonged to the Danish Viking Club and enjoyed time with fellow immigrants from Denmark. Thor especially loved to dance and always made sure all the ladies got a chance on the dance floor. He was a quiet, but caring man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was that kind of man until the day he died.
He is predeceased by brothers Bill and Freddy and sisters Aase Stenstrup and Erna Kirk. He leaves two sisters in Denmark, Tove Graesborg and Karen Nielsen. There are three children: Else Karen Tinlin (Harold) and Niels (Kristi) born in Denmark and Kenny (Janice) born in Canada. There are six grandchildren: Craig (Tonjia), Cody (Mary), Dana McElligott (David), Gary, David Tinlin and Doug Tinlin (Barbara); four great grandchildren: Nicole West (Phil), Logan McElligott , Keira and Lily and three great great grandchildren: Palin, Logan and Landon West. Thor leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews in Denmark but was especially close to his brother Bill’s children in America. (Karen Wray, Gordon and Ronnie). Thor was also close to brother-in-law Jørgen Bojesen (Lillian) and their children Lone and Leon in Denmark.
There will be no memorial service as per Thor’s wishes. The family asks that you just remember Thor with a smile and perhaps a skål if you are so inclined, to toast this kind and gentle man who was loved and will be missed by his family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.weaver-mortuary.com for the Linderoth family.
