Patricia Elaine McCormick, 79, of Beckley, WV, passed away in her home on Sunday, April 10, 2022. Born in Belle Vernon, PA on January 16, 1943, she was the second child of Charles and Esther Summers. Pat’s love of God began early in life and she was baptized at the age of 10. Her family stood around her in awe as this young girl overcame the debilitating effects of polio. Pat’s positive spirit, determination, and inner strength would be evident for the rest of her life.
After living in Oklahoma, the family settled in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Pat’s love for watching things grow probably began here on the farm. From having the best looking row of corn among her siblings to tending her numerous plants wherever she lived, she had a natural talent for gardening.
Pat was introduced to a friend’s brother, Dennis, at a high school dance; he would become the love of her life. Pat was so proud of Dennis and his accomplishments and was fulfilled in being his helpmate in life. Preparing his morning coffee, proofreading business letters, accompanying him on many business trips, and being his constant source of comfort, she was the epitome of a loving wife. As a couple, they were known for their witty humor, Dairy Queen runs, and Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy rivalry. Pat had a remarkable way of giving Dennis and their two children everything that mattered...delicious meals (the best breakfast!), words of wisdom, a beautiful home and safe haven, and most importantly, the benefit of having a Christian wife and mother as a pillar of their family.
Pat received her Master’s Degree in English from Fairmont State College. She became a teacher and was devoted to building up her students, not only with knowledge but with self-worth. Her career included teaching at both elementary and high school levels. In most recent years, she was a member of Liberty Church of Christ in Beckley. She also leaves behind church families she loved dearly in areas including Clarksburg, WV, Mansfield, OH, Birmingham, AL, and Martinsburg, WV. Pat was diligent in her work for the Lord’s church, teaching children’s bible classes, participating in a women’s outreach program at a local prison, encouraging others with her loving words, and doing everything she could to lead others to God. Her faith was nurtured through daily Bible study and prayer.
As Nanna, Pat found joy in the time spent with her seven grandchildren. They fondly remember her tea parties, sleepovers, chocolate chip and M&M cookies, board and card games, going to the movies, pecan pie, her love for birds, her soft spoken nature, and her ability to make you feel special.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Caird Rexroad, Jr., and nephew, Tim Summers. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 58 years, Dennis McCormick of Beckley; daughter, Rebecca (Steve) Treadway of Maple Fork; son, Clark (Kristi) McCormick of Beckley; grandchildren, Madison (Austin) Willis, Steven Treadway, Kendall Treadway, Mason (Kennedy) McCormick, Wyatt McCormick, Charlie Treadway, and Levi McCormick; siblings Joe (Louella) Summers of Clarksburg, Doreen Rexroad of Round Hill, VA, and Florence (David) Lough of Clarksburg; and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and church family.
Per Pat’s request, there will be no public service.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”
