Stoney was born in Meadow Creek, West Virginia to the late James and Louisa Stone on December 27th, 1938. He proudly served in the US Navy aboard the USS Edisto from 1960-1964. From too young of an age, he met hard work with grit, strength, determination, quickly becoming a jack of all trades. He never backed down from a task that needed tackling, and if he didn’t have it in his garage already, it didn’t exist. He always said, “don’t buy it until you ask if I have it.”
He was a wonderful man, full of thoughtfulness, depthless care, and immense love. He was and is, a cherished husband, daddy, and papaw. He left irreplaceable memories forever etched in the hearts of his family and friends.
His family includes his wife of 53 years, Barbara Stone; a daughter, Debbie (Earl) Halstead; grandchildren, Krystal (Daniel) Baker and Elliot “Seth” (Chloe) Halstead; great-grandchildren, “Roland” and Ember Baker and the soon to be born Ezra “Stone” Halstead.
Stoney was also an amazing bonus dad to daughter Libby (Carl) Whittaker and son (the late) Chuck (Dolly) Meadows.
He was the oldest of his brothers and sisters.
Stoney is survived by James Oliver Stone and Shirley Morton.
He was preceded in death by Janie Hylton, Patricia Welch, Sara Cox, and Tom (Duke) Richmond.
Stoney’s many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends were so great in number, they’re unable to be named here in this space, but that doesn’t diminish the special place they each held in his heart.
The depth of Stoney’s love will easily be remembered above all else.
Funeral services for Stoney will be on Thursday, October 16th, 2025, at 2PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with the grandchildren and Pastor Charles Tilley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Stoney will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens following the service.
