

Steven Dale Mays, 57, passed away from an extended illness due to complications of an accident from falling, and subdural hematoma, on July 18, 2015. He was at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born August 2, 1958 in Beckley, WV, he was the youngest son of Charles “Chuck” Mays and the late Thelma Redden Mays. Steven was a “special needs child” and thrived from the love and care of his family. He was involved with ResCare, CCIL, and Commission on Aging. He attended Blue Jay School for the Developmentally Impaired. Steve had many friends and was very well known in the area. He was one of God’s “Special Children”, and everyone he met was touched by him. His many loves included “Herbie”, Smokey and the Bandit, Mickey Mouse, anything involving trucks and equipment, camping, and working on puzzles. He loved his family and was a valued member. In addition to his mother, Steven is preceded in death by grandparents, Jessie and Georgia Redden as well as grandparents, Luther and Golda Mays. Those left to cherish his memory include his father, Charles “Chuck” Mays, or “Wiggy”, as Steven called him; brother, Jeffery W. Mays and wife Sylvia of Beaver; niece, Christina D. Mays (children Carrie Ann Chapman and Alex W. Carr) of Beaver; nephews, Christopher W. Mays and wife Colleen (daughter Ryann) of White Oak, Scott Aaron Mays (children: Aiden, Ashton, Avery, Anson, Colin, Landon, and Joshua) of White Oak, Fred Smith III of Beckley; uncles, Howard Mays and wife Marlene of Beckley, Howard Redden of Beaver; aunts, Carol Sweeney and husband William of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Irene Pauley of Lexington, SC. Friends may gather with the family Monday, May 2, 2016 from 11am – 12pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday, May 2, 2016 at 12pm at the funeral home.
