Ed was born to the late Edith and Edwin Matthai, May 19, 1930 in Essex, MD. He graduated from Kenwood High School in 1948 and then attended the Maryland Institute of Art. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 and was on the USS Bataan in the Sea of Japan during the Korean War and honorably discharged in 1952. Ed attended the University of Maryland College Park and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1958.He worked for Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point until he retired in 1996. While at Bethlehem Steel he was awarded the American Iron and Steel Institute Award for his work on the "L" Blast Furnace.
Ed married Doris in 1959 and they lived in Towson , MD, before relocating to Joppatowne in 1966. Ed and Doris were married 57 years and were inseparable until her passing in 2016. Ed was an active member of Good Shepard Presbyterian Church. Ed loved to paint, work in the yard and root for the Orioles and Ravens.
He is survived by three children: Jeff Matthai of Bel Air, MD, Mark Matthai of Bel Air , MD and Kevin Matthai of West Chester, PA. Also a brother Thomas Matthai of Fallston, MD and three grandchildren, Max, Haley and Michael.
