It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ellen “Ellie” Loreen Hickey (nee Berbig), on May 21st, 2026, at the age of 66. Beloved wife of Brian Hickey; Devoted mother of Brianna Emhoff and her husband David and Patrick Joseph Hickey and his partner Jessica; Loving grandmother of Hailey Emhoff and Avery Emhoff; Cherished step grandmother of Caitlin Emhoff and Erica Emhoff; Dear sister of Kathy Rus. Ellie is also survived by her father Richard Berbig and his wife Elsa, many nieces and nephews, extended family, many friends, colleagues, and grand-dog Tanuki. Her surviving family will carry forward her legacy of kindness, strength, and joy.
Born in Bethpage, New York, Ellen carried with her a lifelong connection to her Long Island roots. She built a life defined by compassion, energy, and service to others. As a school psychologist in Harford County, she touched countless lives, offering guidance, empathy, and unwavering support to the students and families she served. Her work was not just a profession, but a calling; one that reflected her belief in nurturing the potential in everyone she met.
Beyond her career, Ellen was a dynamic presence as a community leader. She served as a commissioner for Noth Bay Rugby, helping to grow the sport and foster teamwork, leadership, and camaraderie among players. Whether on the sidelines or organizing events, she brought enthusiasm and dedication to everything she did. Every time a person or organization put a roadblock in her way, Ellen found a way around it. Some have said that without Ellen, North Bay Rugby as it is today would not exist.
In recent years, she found great joy on the pickleball court, where her competitive spirit and sense of fun shone brightly. The game became another way for her to bring people together, forming friendships and sharing laughter. Ellen was especially cherished in Bayside, where she built a wide circle of close friends who became like family. She valued these connections deeply and was known for her warmth, generosity, and ability to make everyone feel welcome.
She also had a love for travel, embracing new places and experiences with curiosity and excitement. But above all, her greatest joy came from spending time with her beloved grandchildren. They were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment shared with them, creating memories that will live on in their hearts forever.
A receiving of friends will take place at Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air, Inc., located at 610 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air, MD 21014 on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, from 2pm to 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ellie’s name to Forest Lakes Elementary School PTA.
She will be deeply missed and forever fondly remembered.
