Ernest F. Walz died on December 2, 2012, a Sunday, at Avondell. Born in Plainfield, NJ, on July 28, 1927, he was the son of George and Emme (Stetter) Walz. He served proudly as a Marine for 8 years which included service during WWII, and was the youngest staff sergeant appointed in his time. Mr. Walz lived and worked in the Gaithersburg/Rockville area for over 25 years with the Montgomery County government where he worked in human resources and founded the Montgomery County Employees' Federal Credit Union. An avid reader and lover of ships and history, he was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marine Corps League. He retired to Chestertown in 1982, belonged to St. Aidan's Anglican Church, and joined the Chestertown American Legion. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Wilma (Kovach) and sister Anita Signorello of Meshoppen, PA. He is survived by brother Walter Walz and wife Louise of North Plainfield, NJ, his two daughters: Michelle Walz of Fredericksburg, VA, Deborah Walz of Brookline, NH; his 3 step-daughters: Frances Marlatt of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Susan Mearns of California, Helen Mearns of Fallston; dear grandfather of Johnathan Casey Shortridge and his wife Stephanie, Noelle Bourquard, Caitlin Marlatt Davis, Adam Marlatt and Hannah Mearns, great-grandfather of Haley Rogers and Jaiden Shortridge. He was also survived by many other family members and friends. He was active in the social life at Avondell and became fondly known as "Mr. Bingo".
A memorial service will be held at St. Aidans at 11 am on Saturday, Dec 8 meeting at Trinity Church, 101 Greenwood Avenue, Chestertown, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org) or to Global D.I.R.T. (www.globaldirt.org).
