On Sunday, February 21, 2021 SGM James “Jim” H. Halterman, Jr. (Retired) passed away at age 76 while visiting family in Boise, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Joan Halterman (previously Warble, previously Harris), his children James Halterman, III of South Carolina, Barbra Pitcher, William “Billy” Warble and his wife Tina of MacKay, Idaho, and Jean K. Watson and her husband Chuck of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also survived by his brothers, Douglas R. Halterman of MacKay, Idaho, and William “Bill” Halterman and his wife Peggy of Virginia. Jim had many nephews and nieces; Douglas Halterman, Jr. and his wife Sunny, Lisa Warner and her husband Bruce, Douglas Kottraba and his wife Dawn, Kimberly Smith, Bill Halterman, Jr., Teresa Baker and her husband Jeff, and Amy Stein. He also had three grandchildren: Nicole K. Jansen, Lilith C. Warble and Spencer J. Halterman, as well as many great nieces and nephews.
James was born on March 18, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland to James, Sr. and Lucille (Long) Halterman. He enlisted in the Marine Corps out of high school and served two tours in Vietnam where he received numerous commendations. He then joined the Active Guard and Reserve where he obtained the rank of Sergeant Major. After retiring from active service, Jim continued to serve his country as a Department of Defense employee in Washington, DC. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as Deputy of Force Structure for the National Guard Bureau. He retired from the Department of Defense with many accolades and awards. Jim continued to serve his country as a member and President of the SATS Organization. He enjoyed travel, collecting trains and Marine memorabilia, and spending time with his family.
Services will be held at the Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 2 – 4 p.m. Services will also be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. McPhail Road, Bel Air, MD 21014 from 3-5 and 7-9. Jim will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
