

Carol Jo Niedzwiecki, 89, of Lecanto, Fl, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026 at Vitas Healthcare in Lecanto. A native of Fostoria, OH, she was born Aug. 15, 1936 to Troy and Opal (Rhoad) Smith, one of five children. Carol moved to Citrus County in 1977 from South Florida and in addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, was a retired medical transcriptionist in the health care industry. Carol was raised in the Protestant faith, attending churches in Ohio, South Florida, and here in Citrus. She felt most at home at the Hernando Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She loved to cook and bake and once won a blue ribbon at the Citrus County Fair for her famous bread and butter pickles. She loved singing in the Nazarene church choir and took painting lessons, becoming a talented painter of landscapes. Carol also loved playing her piano. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her stepfather Ray Kissling; brothers Dan and Jerry Smith; sister Deanna Smith (Steinhauser); niece Jody Frankart; son Gary L. Vitt; and husbands Larry E. Vitt and Eugene Niedzwiecki. She is survived by her two sons: Steve Vitt (Elena) Lecanto, FL and Jon Vitt (Patricia) Buford, GA; grandchildren Kris Vitt (Allison) Fort Collins, CO; Nik Vitt (Avni) Boulder, CO; Dennis Vitt (Summer) Melbourne, FL; Brendan Vitt (Vanessa Everhart), Crystal River FL; Trace Vitt, Lecanto, FL; Kristin Vitt, Atlanta GA; Rachel Christensen (Erik) Lecanto, FL, Addison Vitt, Smyrna, GA and Morgan Schwall, Atlanta, GA: great grandchildren Oliver Vitt, Fort Collins, CO; Niam and Savanna Vitt, Boulder CO and Vivienne Vitt, Crystal River, FL, as well as her sister, Marvene Vitt. Friends will be received on Sat., Feb. 7, 2026 at 12:00 Noon at Fero Funeral Home, Beverly Hills, FL, where a Celebration of Life will begin at 1:00 P.M. Interment will follow in Fero Memorial Gardens.
