Johannes “Hans” Zandee, 76, of Citrus Hills, Fl, passed away peacefully after a brief illness with cancer, on Wed., May 7, 2025 at Vitas Hospice House in Lecanto, FL, with his wife Sabrina by his side. Hans, as he was known to everyone, was born Oct. 24, 1948 in Haarlem, Netherlands to Marinus J. and Willamina Zandee, one of three children. Hans travelled the world starting at a young age of just shy of 17 years by joining the Dutch Merchant Marines. This exposure to diverse perspectives fostered empathy and open-mindedness. Hans possessed a robust culinary background, substantiated by a formal culinary and management education, possessing relevant certifications from the Netherlands. Hans gained invaluable experience working in a variety of high-end establishments. From the fast-paced kitchens of luxury hotels to the unique culinary demands of shipping vessels, the intricate work of exclusive catering companies, and the production environments of wholesale and retail bakeries across the globe, Hans cultivated a wealth of culinary expertise and a deep understanding of the food industry. Having dedicated many years to honing his skills as a multi-talented chef and baker he fulfilled his dream of owning his own bakery. For an impressive 25 years, Hans was a celebrated pastry chef and a proud co-owner of Hans and Harry's Bakery, a well-regarded establishment located in Bonita, CA.
Hans and Sabrina met and married in the beautiful city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Following his immigration from the Netherlands, he was enthralled in learning more about American history and was motivated to become a proud naturalized U.S. citizen. It was a very special occasion for both of Hans and Sabrina. After his well-deserved retirement to Citrus Hills, Florida, Hans embraced an active lifestyle, wholeheartedly pursuing his passions for both golf and developing his creative side. He was a remarkably multi-talented individual, gifted with the ability to play many musical instruments and possessed a truly wonderful singing voice that brought joy to those who heard him. It was during the COVID lockdowns that Hans surprisingly discovered a talent for creating small, precious works of art using both oil and acrylic paints, a testament to his ever-evolving creativity. In addition to his artistic pursuits, he had a lifelong love for gardening, with a keen interest in the delicate art of cultivating bonsais. Many of us also knew he was a fervent supporter of both soccer and golf, following the games with great enthusiasm. Throughout his rich and fulfilling life, Hans enjoyed traveling the world, experiencing different cultures and creating lasting memories.
Mr. Zandee was preceded in death by his parents, Marinus Jacobus Zandee and Willamina Zandee, and his older brother, 'Rino' Marinus Zandee, and is survived by his loving wife Sabrina Mizrahi; his sister Mieke Zandee Wohler (Henk); his sister-in- law Anita Wakkee; nephew Alex Wohler (Rachele) and niece Femke Wohler Nouse (Iman); his brother-in-law Ralph Mizrahi (Lona); nephew Daniel Mizrahi, (Sarah); nephew Jeffrey Mizrahi (Samantha); brother-in-law Robert Mizrahi (Hindy); nephew Scott Mizrahi (Lindsay); nephews Stephen and Matthew Mizrahi. As well as his many great nieces and great nephews .
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Hans will always remember his truly infectious smile and the sound of his overwhelming laughter, which could brighten any room. It's a comfort to remember that he maintained that wonderful sense of humor and his glowing smile until the very end.
