born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 23, 1938, and passed away on January 7, 2026.
Bert resided in Birmingham his entire life. He graduated from Ramsey High School, received his degree in broadcast communications from the University of Alabama, and began working with his father at Jefferson Iron and Metal. Thereafter, he joined his father-in-law at Star Hardware & Supply until 1984. He later held positions at Mayer Electric, Just For Feet, Mazers and Metro.
Bert ran more than 26 marathons including the Athens, Greece marathon, along with numerous half marathons and the annual July 4th Peachtree runs with his daughter Cathy.
Bert was also involved in many community organizations including Meals On Wheels, Temple Beth-El, Levite Jewish Community Center, and the Birmingham Jewish Federation.
Bert always had a smile on his face and his hand out to greet or meet that next person and offer them assistance in any way he could. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Bert was predeceased by his loving wife of 20 years, Lynn Spielberger Bloomston
Bert is survived by his children, Jill Martin (Michael), Cathy Kaplan, Michael Bloomston, Julius Bloomston (Heidi), Wendy Rutkoff (Jonathan), Scott Spielberger (Audra); grandchildren, Molly Patton, Ethan Patton (Rae), Amy White (Derek), Jessica Caspar (Joseph), Blake Kaplan, Alex, Annie, and Claire Bloomston, Brandon and Eric Bloomston, Ida and Bobby Spielberger, Samantha Spielberger; great-grandchildren, Evan Patton, Natalie and Hannah White, Ellie Rose and Olivia Patton, and many other cousins and friends.
