Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Donald lived a life marked by service, integrity, and compassion. After graduating in 1961 from St. Mary’s of Loretto High School in Montgomery, Alabama, He proudly served his country in the United States Army and the Army National Guard and later dedicated over three decades to protecting his community through the City of Birmingham Police Department, where he served as a Motor Scout and in the Tactical Unit. His commitment to justice and safety continued with nearly 12 years of service in the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
He was actively involved in several organizations, including the West Hill Lions Club, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Patriot Guard Riders, and the Alabaster American Legion, reflecting his enduring dedication to community and country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine Grier Ryan Thorton, Robert Shevlin Ryan, and his stepfather, Fred Thorton; siblings Robert Ryan, William Ryan, Ann Margaret Ryan Bugbee, and Mary Ryan Medlen; and his beloved wife of 52 years, Estelle Lawrence Ryan.
Donald is survived by his adoring wife, Pearl Deaton Ryan. He leaves behind his children: Ricky Ryan (Phyllis Malloch) of Calera and Donna Brewer (Edward) of Alabaster; and his cherished granddaughters, Katie Brewer and Krista Brewer, who knew him lovingly as “Pawpaw.” His love for his family was evident in every moment spent together, whether riding his motorcycle, painting, enjoying the outdoors, or simply sharing laughter and stories.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum. Rev. John Mount will officiate.
Donald J. Ryan will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his honorable service, and the warmth he brought to all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he served so faithfully.
