Yvonne was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Nathan Levi Brown and Callie Johnson Brown.
She moved to Birmingham with her parents as they went to work for Avondale Mills. Yvonne attended Woodlawn High School and graduated in 1948. Following high school, she worked as a stenographer. Then she eloped with Hugh L. Duncan, Jr. on August 25, 1951; and together, they had four children (Ann, John, Carol, and Albert).
Yvonne was first and foremost, a devoted wife and mother to Hugh and her children. The family relocated from Birmingham, AL to St. Louis, MO, Topeka, KS, and Cincinnati, OH as Hugh transferred periodically. At the end of his career, they returned to Birmingham to retire.
In addition to caring for her family, Yvonne worked both in the private and public sectors, working in multiple branches of the federal government (FAA, EPA, and DOJ).
Hugh and Yvonne Duncan were faithful members of East Lake United Methodist Church and the Friendship Class. Yvonne faithfully attended the Wednesday Bible Study Class at East Lake UMC when she was in better health.
Yvonne is survived by her loving children, Ann D. Barber (R.L), John Mark Duncan (Dian), Martha Carol D. Moore (Tad), and Albert Scott Duncan; grandchildren Amanda Sorrell Bond, Justin Wesley Baumann (Julia), Jacob John Baumann (Wyndi); and great-grandson, Niles Alexander Bond. Yvonne also leaves behind two nieces, Glenda Crowe and Mary Mason; as well as two nephews, Chuck Hagaman and David Hagaman. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of almost 60 years.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the care team of nurses, CNAs, and other support staff at East Glen Nursing Home who cared for their mother.
Additionally, they wish to also express their love and appreciation to Mrs. Mussierene Mitchell, who has been a member of the family since 2010 when she first arrived to help care for Hugh and Yvonne.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Yvonne’s memory may be made to their favorite ministry: Eastern Area Christian Ministries, P.O. Box 610847, Birmingham, AL 35261-0847.
The funeral for Yvonne is scheduled for 3 p.m. on August 25, 2018 at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will begin an hour earlier at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
