

Hampton Swygert Schauer, Lt. Col Air Force, retired, passed away at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sara Lovda Schauer; parents and his siblings Jack, Carroll Karch, and Leonora Jones. Hampton is survived by his three sons, Douglas, Mark, and Bradley; six grandchildren, Daniel Schauer (Claire), Dennis Schauer (Melynda), Bryan Schauer (Katrina), Joseph Schauer (Somer), Andrew Schauer, Mandi Sherer (JM); ten great-grandchildren, Lucie, Chloe, Austen, Samuel,Timothy, Abigail, Braxton, Kessaline, and Huck Schauer, and Emi Sherer; one brother, Bill Schauer; four sisters, Alicia Wall, Jo Ann Mazurette of California, Jane Reedy, of Ohio, and Nita Kennum; and many nieces and nephews.
Hampton attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham and several military schools. He enjoyed two careers, one military and one helping his father at Birmingham Letterhead Co. He served 30 years in the Air Force: 5 years active duty and 25 in the Air National Guard.
He was a founding member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where he was an active member of the Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus Council 7213 and Fourth Degree Assembly 2304 until his health deteriorated. While active, he was twice named Knight of the Year and once Family of the Year. He was a member of the BPOE, Council 1821, where he was named Elk of the Year. In earlier years, he was also active in the Air National Guard Credit Union, the National Guard bowling team, and the Boy Scouts. Hampton was a lifetime member of the Concordia Club, and the Birmingham Fraternal Council of Clubs, Knights' Chapter. He enjoyed dancing and was remembered for dancing the Twist, going all the way down and back up!
After retiring to Galleria Woods Retirement Community, he enjoyed participating in the many activities offered, especially bridge, poker, dominoes, and the Ambassador Club.
Hampton loved his family to the point of bragging on them at every opportunity. He will be greatly missed as the patriarch of the family.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 11 am until 12 pm at St. Peter The Apostle Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will follow it at 12 pm. Hampton will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Sara, at Birmingham’s historic Elmwood Cemetery. All attendees of the committal service are asked to arrive at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home no later than 12:45 pm to process to the graveside.
