Ivy Vickery “Vicky” Wittichen Henderson was born on May 6, 1952, and passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025. Vicky was the beloved daughter to Carl and Ivy Wittichen. Her childhood days were filled with caring for her many pets as she developed a great love for the outdoors that would shape her life. During her time at Mountain Brook High School, Vicky was a proud member of the Dorian dance team and held many fond memories of her high school years. She went on to Converse College where she pursued a degree in mathematics. After college, Vicky worked at Central Bank and soon developed a love for community service. As a member of The Junior League of Birmingham, Vicky served as Chairman of the Foster Care and Adoption Project, a role that showcased her gift of deep empathy and care for others.
In 1977, Vicky married David Poole Henderson. The adventures continued, including annual scuba diving trips with the Islands Unlimited Dive Group, fishing at Quail Lake Farms, and lots of beach trips. The water was always her happy place! They had 48 years of love, devotion and growth. Vicky's greatest joy came from raising her children and sharing her love for nature and art with them daily. Vicky never met a stranger and never missed an opportunity to share the gospel of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her family takes deep comfort in knowing she is fully healed and rejoicing in heaven.
Vicky was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Ivy Wittichen. She will be deeply missed by her husband David Poole Henderson, her children Ivy Henderson Schuster (Josef) and David Poole Henderson Jr. as well as her two granddaughters Julia Ivy Schuster and Milly Josef Schuster. She loved them so! She is also survived by her sisters Julia Carolyn Wittichen Anderson (Charles) and Linda Inez Wittichen Israel (Charlie) along with many loving nieces and nephews.
In her last days, Vicky found comfort in Scripture, especially Psalm 91:4, lovingly read to her by her son: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Paragon Senior Care and Dana Jackson for their extraordinary care and compassion-your love meant the world to Vicky and to us.
A private family graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on May 19, 2025, followed by a celebration of life from 1pm to 3pm at Elmwood Chapel (800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211). In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Gateway (1401 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205); Children’s of Alabama (1600 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233)
“When we get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!”
