James "Bud" Thurman Smith Jr.

James Thurman "Bud" Smith, Jr., of Leeds, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. He was the oldest of five children born to James Thurman Smith, Sr. and Lillie Belle Gould.

A proud United States Marine, James served his country with honor and carried the values of integrity, discipline, and strength throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bettye Jo Madison Smith; his parents; two sons, William Jeffery Smith and Gregory Scott Smith; his brother, Robert Wesley Smith; and his sisters, Joyce Corrine Smith-Allison and Mary Dolores “Toots” Smith Baxter.

James is survived by his devoted daughter, Brenda; son-in-law, Anthony Davis; cherished granddaughters, Kristi Sullivan, Kimberli (John) Posey, Karmin (Barry) Jones; and his great-grandchildren, Kaili and Kindalyn, Maggie Quinn and Darby, Kaden, Willow and Tye; and bonus great-grandchildren, Haydan and Allie. He also leaves behind his sister, Carolyn Doris Cook, many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to his great-granddaughter, Kaili, who lovingly cared for him during his final days.

A graveside service to celebrate James’ life will be held at **11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19** at **Forest Crest Cemetery**.
