Birmingham native Joan Staton Fowler, 94, passed away in Daytona Beach, Florida, on December 5, 2022, after an illness. She was born at home in East Lake on July 17, 1928, and graduated from Woodlawn High School at 16. Before moving to Florida in 2001, she was a lifelong member of Ruhama Baptist Church, where her father had been a Deacon. At Ruhama, she volunteered in the nursery and became a member of the Adult Choir, eventually serving as alto section leader and choir president. After a decade as a temporary employee of Alabama Power Company in the Corporate Headquarters, she took a permanent position as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Public Affairs. Joan loved her work and the many Power Company friends she made; she continued her connection to the company through the Energizers, eventually serving as president of that retirement organization. In her spare time, Mrs. Fowler became an expert seamstress through advanced classes in tailoring; she also took classes in cakemaking, creating many delicious masterpieces. She enjoyed gardening, travel, and scrapbooking and served as a volunteer with several other cultural and civic organizations. After moving to Florida, she became a member of First Baptist Church of Daytona, where she was active in Sunday School and the Adult Choir. Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Berney F. Fowler; by her older sister Emagean Staton; and by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Staton. She is survived by her daughter Jane Fowler Christeson and her husband, Dr. Norton Christeson of Daytona Beach, grandsons Jesse Christeson (wife Laura) of Boston, and Jordan Christeson of Daytona Beach. A brief graveside service for Mrs. Fowler will be held on January 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
