Ladye Ruth Holcomb Herren, age 95 of Mountain Brook, Alabama passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2019. She was born October 31, 1923, in Nashville, Tennessee to George Whitfield Holcomb, M.D. and Ruth Hyde Holcomb. She is survived by her brother, Dr. George Whitfield, III, M.D. of Nashville; her daughters, Rebecca Herren Bashinsky (Dr. Robert), Catherine Herren Nick, Elaine Gayle Herren, and Alice Herren Hayes (Kevin); her grandchildren, Lisa Bashinsky (John Brassil), Rebecca Bashinsky McGowan (Dan), Robert Wood Bashinsky, Alec Barnes, Pam Barnes Gill (Michael), Elizabeth Barnes Riegler (Justin), Conor Wood Hayes, Christine Hayes Weller (Jeff), Kevin Hayes II (Jenny); and great grandchildren, Brannon Thomas McGowan, Grayson Wood McGowan, Ariel Brassil, Gillian Brassil, Ben Riegler, Abigail Riegler, Caroline Weller, Hayes Weller, Brooks Weller, and Liam Hayes, Cate Hayes, Aidan Hayes, and Isla Hayes. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Wood S. Herren and her daughter Anita Ruth Herren.
Ladye Ruth graduated from Ward- Belmont High School in Nashville, Tennessee and was a member of Theta Phi sorority. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1945 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She married her loving husband, Dr. Wood S. Herren in 1949. She spent a year in Japan with Wood during the Korean War, where he served as Assistant Chief of Medicine, U.S. Army Hospital, Yokahama, Japan (1950 – 1952).
They moved to Birmingham in 1953 where Ruth served as President of the Junior Symphony Association. She was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in United Methodist Women. She attended Community Bible Study for many years. She was a member of Mountain Brook Club, Old Elyton chapter of Daughter of the American Revolution, Dirt Daubers Garden Club, dance clubs, bridge clubs, supper and luncheon clubs.
Ruth always had time for others and had many dear friends. She enjoyed playing tennis and spending time at the beach with family and friends. They remember her for her generosity of spirit, kind heart, and sense of humor, and her infectious ability to spread happiness to all around her. She was a loving wife to her beloved husband, a loving mother, to her five daughters, a loving grandmother and great grandmother. She relished the time she spent with her five daughters, who were her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment, and they were blessed by the time they spent with her.
The family expresses gratitude to the dedicated staff at Kirkwood by the River, for their loving care and concern. Her passing leaves a large community of family and friends inspired by her Christian life and her love for all around her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 3 pm in the chapel of Canterbury United Methodist Church. The family will greet guests at a reception immediately following the service in the church parlor, which is located directly below the sanctuary.
