Born on August 1st, 1953 in Birmingham, AL, Larry grew up in Fairfield where he played football and baseball, including MVP of the football team his senior year, and went on to play baseball and graduate from UAB. He was the devoted husband of Mary Claire Daniels for over 45 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, humor, resilience, and family. He was the very proud father of four boys: Alan, Michael, Will, Tommy, who were the greatest beneficiaries of his unwavering dedication and strength. He supported every son in the many, many sports teams they played on, as well as provided a platform for each of them to overcome anything thrown at them in their own lives. Larry would do anything he could to provide that platform.
He also impacted every player he ever coached; he not only wanted to teach a kid to play the game the right way, he focused on a positive attitude no matter what. He was also one of those people who are truly invisible heroes who have the ability to absorb and overcome any challenge, and do it with a positive attitude. He positively impacted every person and environment lucky enough to have him. He had a unique ability to make everyone he met feel like they were special and could do anything they put their mind to.
He had an ability to make everyone he met feel like they were genuinely special. Friendship meant everything to him. Family, friends, truth, and integrity were all bedrocks of who Larry was. He did the right thing not because he wanted the attention but because it was the right thing to do. He simply made you feel good just by being around him.
Larry was always staying busy. He genuinely wanted and acted to make his community a better place. In his free time, Larry enjoyed traveling to the beach, fishing, golfing, and was passionate about supporting those affected by cancer, serving as a counselor at Camp Bluebird. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained a source of strength, wisdom, humor, and compassion for all who knew him, especially his family and friends. Larry adamantly loved fellowship with all.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Claire; his four sons: Alan (Shoshana), Michael, Will (Molly) and Tommy (Kelly); and their five grandchildren: Lyla, Luke, Leo, Della Rae, and Owen; and a host of extended family and friends who will carry his memory, and the impact they had on him. And in their hearts forever. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, March 27th at John-Ridout's Elmwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to UAB St. Vincent’s Bruno Cancer Centers Patient Aid Program or to Camp Bluebird at 2728-10th Ave South, Ste. 100, Birmingham, AL 35205, in honor of his legacy.
