Larry Fullington died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on February 11, 2021. He was an inspiration to many because he was a person who loved life and exuded warmth, compassion and caring to all who knew him. Larry was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 17, 1930 to Lawrence Tatum Fullington, Sr. and Mary Rule Fullington. He
is preceded in death by his parents and also his siblings: Albert Maus, Edward Fullington, Mary Virginia Brasseit, and William Fullington.
Larry graduated from the University of Alabama in 1952, and had been an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. He received a Master’s Degree in Business from Arizona State University and a Master’s Degree in Finance from Stanford University. Larry
worked as a Supervisor and Credit Manager for Chevron Corporation for 36 years. His military service was as an enlisted man with the Navy attached to the SeaBees, and in the Army he was an officer in the Anti-aircraft (Battery Commander). His total military time was two years of active duty and eight years in the Reserves. Larry enjoyed being totally involved in everything he did. He had a keen interest in national and local politics and government and was a community activist working on local measures and propositions. He spent the last 22 years serving on various commissions for the City of Benicia such as Chairman of the Audit & Finance Committee, Economic Development Board and Open Government Commission. He often attended City Council meetings and was a regular participant answering residents’ questions at the Farmers
Market. Larry was a member of the Benicia Historical Museum (Camel Barn Museum), a docent on the Historic Home Tours for the Benicia Historical Society, (SIRS (Sons in Retirement), and played Geezer Golf on Wednesdays. He looked forward to schussing down the slopes of
Sugar Bowl and Mt. Rose every winter since he learned to ski at age sixty eight. Always a track star in high school and college, he prided himself on keeping physically fit by walking, working out with weights and running up and down the steps at the 50 acre Community
Park. He was a wild man on the dance floor!! For many years Larry was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in
Vallejo. He led the singing and the service and gave a number of sermons in the minister’s absence. Years later, Larry attended St. Dominic’s Church, and, although not a member of the church, sang in the choir for five years. His faith in God was the cornerstone of his life.
Larry spent the last 27 years of his life enjoying the company of the love of his life, Kate McNamara. Previously, he was married to Mary Miles Ventress from 1952 – 1962 and divorced. He was married to Nancy Burkhart from 1964 until her death in 1992. He was the patriarch of the Fullington family and a much loved father, grandfather, and great
grandfather. He always spoke proudly of his children Michael Gregory Fullington (Tara), Vicki Fullington, Sheri Headley (Rhett) and Robert Burkhart (Susan) and Richard Burkhart. Of special mention is grandson Jason Burkhart whom Larry and Nancy helped raise. Larry was
blessed with 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
