

Mark Harvey Elovitz, PhD, JD, Rabbi, passed away on November 17, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1938, to Lillian Werner Elovitz (z’l) and Meyer David Elovitz (z’l). Dr. Elovitz spent the last 55 years in Birmingham, where he raised his family. He was a graduate of NYU, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Cumberland Law School. He served in the USAF as an Officer / Chaplain at Lindsey Air Station in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a pulpit rabbi for many congregations, including Congregation Beth El in Birmingham, Alabama, and he represented hundreds of clients in civil litigation as a lawyer. In retirement, he travelled the world with his wife, Martha, and was well known for
his geopolitical lectures. When he wasn’t learning or sharing his expertise with the community, he was teaching his grandchildren how to swim, speak Hebrew, and play tennis. He also loved tending to his garden, which was his place of solace and relaxation.
Dr. Elovitz is survived by his wife, Martha; his brothers: Stuart, Albert, and Shelly Elovitz; his children: Rachel Elovitz (Alex/Sasha); Michal Elovitz (Ari); and Reuben Elovitz; his stepchildren: Hugo Marx (Julia); Hallie Webber (Will), Alice Goodsell (Blake), and Nathan Marx. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren: Benjamin,
Justin, and Aaron Elovitz; Maya and Elliana Sherwood; Hannah and Will Webber; Sara and Joseph Goodsell; and Stella, Samuel, and Julia Marx. He loved and was loved deeply. May his memory be for a blessing. A Graveside Service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, located at 600 Martin Luther King Jr Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35211 Friday, November 21, 2025 at 2:30 PM.
