With deep sorrow and abiding love, we announce the passing of Martha Alma Smith, who departed this life on August 12, 2025, at the age of 102. Martha was a cherished daughter, devoted professional, and beloved member of the Birmingham community.
Born on September 2, 1922, Martha lived a life marked by grace, resilience, and quiet strength. She dedicated many years of service to U.S. Steel, where she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment made her a respected colleague and a valued part of the company’s legacy.
Martha will be laid to rest beside her beloved parents, Oscar I. Smith and Odessa Johnsey Smith, at Birmingham’s Historic Elmwood Cemetery. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. All who wish to honor her memory are kindly asked to gather at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home, located at 800 Dennison Avenue Southwest, Birmingham, Alabama 35211, by 9:45 a.m. to process to the graveside together.
Martha’s life was a testament to quiet dignity and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
