

Marvin L. Broome, Sr., age 92, died on Saturday, March 22, 2014 after a brief illness. He is survived by his only son, Marvin L. Broome, Jr. (Diane); two grandchildren, Mandy Duncan (Chris) and Kerry Broome (Kim); and 5 great grandchildren, Abby, Emma, Sarah, Colin, and Landon. He is also survived by sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Sofonia and Mrs. Jean Fortenberry (John), a brother, LeRoy Broome (Bobbie), and nieces and nephews.
Marvin was born in 1922 in Water Valley, Mississippi, the oldest of 8 children. He moved to Birmingham and worked as a paint contractor with his father and brothers and then on his own until his retirement in about 1992. He was married to Martha Franks Broome for 62 years until her death in 2003.
Marvin was a proud veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant in Central Europe. He enjoyed talking about his experiences during the war. He was one of the early members of Hunter Street Baptist Church and loved the Cornerstone Men’s Class. He was a charter member of the West Hills Lions Club, currently the Homewood Metro Lions Club.
Services will be held this Tuesday, March 25, at Johns-Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel with visitation at 1:00 followed by the service at 2:00. Rev. Chris Sullivan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bluff Park Methodist Church Under the Bridge Program which provides meals to the homeless. BPUMC is located at 733 Valley Street, Hoover, AL. 35226.
