surrounded by her family.
Mozell was born on April 27, 1937 in Fayette, Alabama, to John Paul Carroll and Evie May
Stokes Carroll. (She will no doubt haunt the composer of this obituary for telling her age. She
never did.) She grew up in Fayette with seven siblings. She loved to tell stories of her
childhood, mostly about her younger sister Ratha. The family remained close throughout their
adult lives and passed the importance of family on to their children.
Mozell was preceded in death by her parents and her infant daughter, Carroll Stephens. She is
also preceded in death by her brothers, Acie Marion Carroll (Bud), Dalton Carroll, Ernie Paul
Carroll (Brother), her sisters, Pauline Carroll Moore and Nell Dean Carroll Barrett.
Mozell is survived by her son, Van Stephens (Courtney), her grandsons, Chase Stephens
(Sara), Micah Stephens (Samantha), and great grandchildren, Solomon and Raylee. She is
also survived by her brother Pervy Carroll (Nell) of Fayette, Alabama, sister Ratha Carroll
Johnson of Cordova, Alabama and sister-in-law Dot Wilson (Jim) of Juneau, Alaska, and a host
of nieces and nephews. All of whom she loved very much.
Mozell worked as a Real Estate Agent in the Birmingham area for more than forty years. She
began her career with Martinique Realty in the 1970’s. For years she was co-owner of
Stephens Home & Land, Inc. Mozell was very successful in her vocation and was a Lifetime
Member of the Million Dollar Sales Club. She was very well respected in the industry, loved by
her clients and respected for her no nonsense, but humorous approach to everything.
She was a long time member of Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church. She loved her
friends there, and loved receiving the cards they sent on a regular basis.
Mozell will be remembered by her family and friends as one of the strongest women who ever
lived. She was beautiful until her last breath and always presented herself with class. She was
sincere and honest, whether we liked it or not, and always had something to say or do that
would elicit laughter (or make you mad). She will be missed, but never forgotten. Her legacy
will live forever in her family. She left an indelible impression on everyone who knew her during
all the seasons of her life. She was truly one of a kind.
Mozell was cremated, per her request, on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. There will be a memorial
service at a later date.
