Nancy Lamar (Holley) Capicik, age 75, of Irondale, Alabama, died of natural causes on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on April 14th, 10:30 AM at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. We invite anyone who knew her to attend and remember her wonderful life.
Born on January 1st, 1948, to the late Dr. Howard Lamar Holley and Martha Chambliss (Holcomb) Holley, she was one of five children. Preceding in death were her brother Danny Gross (Lois); and her sister, Jane Holley Neal (Steve). She is survived by her devoted husband, Paul J. Capicik; her brothers, Warren Holley (Sonya), and Howard Holley (Robin); her children, Lisa Capicik, Paul Steffen Capicik (Miriam), Holley Dunigan (David); her grandchildren Meagan Lord (Larry), Walker Dunigan, Macie Capicik, Conley Dunigan, Teagan Dunigan, Jason Capicik, Joseph Capicik; and one great-grandchild, Ava Lord.
Nancy cherished her childhood growing up in the Birmingham area, surrounded by many wonderful cousins, aunts, uncles, family, and friends. She enjoyed summers with her grandparents in Trussville and Marion, where she developed a deep appreciation of faith and family which she carried throughout her life. She also inherited a passion for life-long learning. After attending Brooke Hill School, she attended Judson College in Marion, AL. Later in life, she continued to study European history and English literature at Auburn University in Montgomery.
She was a genuine southern belle with one exception to the rule: she married a young pilot from Wisconsin. She and Paul stayed dedicated to each other all through their 55-year marriage, with 26 of those years spent as a military partner, moving around the US and Europe. She carried the responsibility of raising the family while her husband was deployed in Vietnam and many other places over the years.
Throughout her life, she had a variety of interests. She was an avid reader and loved to share a good book. As a youth, she loved riding and caring for horses. As a young wife, she and her husband loved to snow and water ski in the various places they lived. She loved to cook and share family recipes, especially when the family would gather at her home during the holidays. Despite her busy lifestyle as a military spouse, she managed to become an expert in oriental rugs; working her way up to buyer and regional manager. Singing in a choir was always a source of pleasure for her, and it was one of her preferred ways to show her faith, particularly at the Mountain Brook Baptist Church.
Nancy was a compassionate soul and cared deeply for her family and friends; always taking time to visit, offering a thoughtful gift, a meal together, or just offering her time was her way to share the love she had for those in her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Mountain Brook First Baptist Church.
