Neil was born to his parents, Clement and Gertrude Segars, on February 4, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a graduate of Ensley High School, and earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from the University of Alabama in 1961, a Juris Doctorate from Birmingham School of Law in 1968 and a Masters of Business Administration from St. Xavier University in 1975.
Neil married the love of his life, Carolyn Thrailkill Segars, in 1960, who survives him. Neil is preceded in death by his daughter Carolyn Ann Segars and is survived by children Neil Gregory Segars, Jr. (Angie), Scott Alan Segars (Keelie), Geoffrey Thrailkill Segars (Margret), grandchildren Jennifer Leigh Maddox, Lori Maddox Farley (Bradford) and a host of other grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After a successful career with Univac, Neil and Carolyn founded Mid-South Data Industries which operated five offices across the southeastern United States.
Neil served the community as a member of the Birmingham Southern College board of directors and was an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, the Gideons and Kairos Ministries. He also dedicated his time to the Emmaus community, mentoring others and teaching adults, both inside and outside of the prison community, to read.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at Elmwood Chapel on Thursday, September 10 from 4:00 to 6:00 and Friday, September 11 at 11:00, respectively.
