Nelson Saleem Salem

Nelson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend whose life was marked by a deep love for his family, resilience in the face of life’s many challenges, strong faith in God, and unwavering integrity. He was known for his uncommon optimism, confidence in both himself and others, and contentment with what he often described as a very blessed life. He was loved by all who knew him because he loved others so well.

Nelson spent the majority of his career at Rust Engineering in Birmingham as a senior piping designer, where he was respected for his natural talent, consistency, and reliability.

His hobbies included many do-it-yourself projects around the house, pitching on both church and company softball teams, and drawing caricatures of family and friends. He also loved to sing at home and dance at weddings. Nelson faithfully and optimistically followed his two favorite sports teams, the Cleveland Browns and the Auburn Tigers. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family, no matter how far he had to travel to be with them.

Nelson was preceded in death by his birth parents, Brahim and Marie Salem; his adoptive parents, George and Evelyn Salem; and his sisters, Jeanette Salem Zagara (Frank) and Diana Salem Harb (Daniel).

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marie Shunnarah Salem; his 5 children, Debbie Hanania (Jack), Gina Farmand (Musa), Richie Salem (Melissa), Greg Salem (Sherrie), and Robbie Salem (Desi); 13 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren (soon to be 10), all of whom will forever treasure his guidance, kindness, and the remarkable legacy he leaves behind
