

Norma Steward Bice Gardner age 97 of Birmingham passed away May 10, 2012. She was born on May 13, 1914 in Sayre, AL. She attended West End High School. She and her husband, Courleaux worked many years teaching youth in Sunday school and Training Union at Liberty Park Baptist Church, formerly Woodlawn Baptist Church. She served on various committees including Benevolent and Baptism. She worked at Silvers Five and Dime, Birmingham Board of Education, Barrett Elementary School, University of Alabama Birmingham Bookstore. She married her husband, Courleaux, at Avondale Methodist Church on March 16, 1932. Mrs. Gardner was awarded lifetime membership in the PTA after many years of working tirelessly for students of Birmingham City Schools. Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years and the father of her children, Lewis Courleaux, Bice, Sr.; her husband of 20 years, John William Gardner; son, Lewis Courleaux Bice, Jr.; great grandson, Brad Nicholson; parents, Jessie Elizabeth Perkins Steward Hunt and Samuel Alexander Steward; sister, Mary Olivia Steward Gragg; brother, John Samuel Steward; and son-in-law, Leonard Wayne Smith, Sr. “Smitty”. She is survived by her loving daughters, Nancy Smith, Lynette Casey (Gerry), Mary Williams (Jim), Brenda Jacobs (Paul), Susan Green (Jim); daughter-in-law, Dianne Keith Bice; brother, George William Hunt; sister, Margaret Hunt Martin; 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren; 3 stepsons, Robert Gardner, Richard Gardner, Ronald Gardner, and their families. Service will be at Liberty Park Baptist Church on Saturday, May 12, 2012 with visitation beginning at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Paul Jacobs, Jim Green, Gerry Casey, Jim Williams, Brant Bice, Paul Jacobs Sr., Adam Green, Jim Williams, Jr. Jeff Williams, Jamie Green, III, Lewis C. Bice, III, Len Smith, Todd Smith, and Chris Casey.
