youngest of three daughters born to Algie Gray and Onilla Albritton Gray. She is preceded in death by
her older sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbye Gray Mobley (Earl) and Joan Gray Rasberry (Billy Joe).
Pat lived a very full and successful life. She attended Thompson High School where she became the head majorette, but after her family moved, she graduated from Ramsey High School. Around that time, she entered and won runner-up in the Miss Alabama Pageant, obtaining a scholarship to a finishing school. That training proved to be invaluable in her subsequent modeling and professional career.
Soon after her high school graduation, Pat married Thomas York. Together they had one daughter, Vicki
Jo (York) Flynn. Pat found employment at The Club as a secretary. She was soon discovered by a WBRC television representative and hired as an on-air personality. Coincidentally, she worked alongside Tom York from 1958-1962 on The Morning Show, but not the same "Tom York" she married. Many people will remember watching in order to exercise along with Pat to "The Chicken Fat" Song on The Morning Show. WBRC station management also assigned her as the weather anchor. Though she had no formal meteorological training, or radar access, she befriended a resource at the Birmingham Airport who helped to provide her with daily weather predictions.
When her time on The Morning Show ended, Pat continued working for the WBRC station until 1979.
Some of her other programs included, Young People's World, which aired every afternoon, and also The
Late Show. She often conducted interviews for WBRC with celebrities who were visiting Birmingham.
Some of her fondest memories were interviews with Joan Crawford, Vincent Price, Clint Eastwood, Shug
Jordan and Bear Bryant. In addition to her daily television programs, Pat worked the annual on-air
Cerebral Palsy Telethon, sponsored by WBRC, and somehow found time to model for several businesses and to be the spokesperson for Pepsi, as well.
Pat moved to Panama City Beach, Florida, in 1979, where she retired from television after working for a
couple of years at the local ABC affiliate, WMBB 13. She, along with her husband, Tom, opened a small
- restaurant in the downtown area, that also served as an outreach ministry. It was so successful that they opened another location closer to the beach side. They were very active in their church and Pat enjoyed teaching Sunday School. She loved to host her daughter and grandchildren when they visited her at the beach. They always looked forward to her delicious fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, and peanut butter pie. Pat was known as "Gran" to her grandchildren, and she never failed to have little surprises and toys waiting for them for whenever they would visit. She lived in Florida until 1999 when, due to Tom's failing health, they moved back home to Birmingham to be closer to family. Her husband, Tom, passed away in 2006, and Pat lived out the rest of her days quietly with close family and friends nearby. She was honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Alabama Broadcaster Association in 2015.
