She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Shailesh P. Upadhyay, the great love of her life, and by her precious son, Ambarish Shailesh Upadhyay, whom she carried in her heart always.
Rita is survived by her daughters, Mickey Shailesh Mendell and Reena Shailesh Upadhyay (Joseph Peterson), and by the four grandchildren who were the center of her world: Alexander Ambarish Mendell, Nicholas Shailesh Mendell, Archer Shailesh Peterson, and Daphne Ambarish Peterson.
To know Rita was to know warmth, vibrancy, and curiosity. She had a rare gift for being deeply interested in the world and in people. She loved to travel more than anything, and had the joy of experiencing so many countries. The list of countries is long, but her heart was always in Paris. Whether she was exploring a new city, discovering a new restaurant, or learning about another culture, she approached life with enthusiasm and an open heart.
Rita was brilliant in so many ways. She worked alongside her husband as the office manager of their medical practice and helped build a successful business through hard work, instinct, and determination. She also had an extraordinary mind for finance and investing. After her husband, perhaps her greatest love was the stock market.
She was equally creative and soulful. Rita loved painting and exploring different forms of art. She loved music, Hindi films, beauty, color, and ideas. She was endlessly curious and always eager to learn something new. She could move easily between conversations about art, finance, world events, film, family, and philanthropy — all with intelligence and humor.
She was also profoundly generous. Rita believed deeply in helping others and quietly supported many charitable causes throughout her life. She established scholarships and gave to organizations and people in ways that reflected her compassion and belief in opportunity and education. Rita firmly believed in the value of education and hard work.
But more than anything else, Rita loved her family fiercely. She treasured being close to her daughters and grandchildren and found her greatest happiness in simply being together — sharing meals, conversations, celebrations, movies, and ordinary moments that became extraordinary because she was there. Her grandchildren brought her immeasurable pride and joy, and she loved each of them with her whole heart.
Her absence leaves an ache that words cannot fully capture. To her family, she was not only a mother and grandmother, but a source of light, strength, laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love.
Rita’s spirit lives on in the family she nurtured, the lives she touched, and the love she gave so freely. She will be missed beyond measure and remembered always.
