Bill, known for his boundless energy, competitive spirit, and gift for storytelling, was born on August 10, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Frances Brook Ransom and Samuel Richard Ransom.
A natural athlete, Bill attended The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he earned recognition as a three-sport letter winner and was later inducted into the Baylor School Sports Hall of Fame. Some of Bill’s fondest childhood memories came from his summers at Baylor’s summer camp, where he made lifelong friendships, embraced new adventures, and even learned to drive a car with one of his coaches. His talent on the track led him to Georgia Tech on a full athletic scholarship, where he lettered in track all four years and set multiple records, including a Southeastern Conference record in the long jump. He also held Georgia Tech’s all-time records in the high jump and pole vault. Bill graduated in 1961 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
Following graduation, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, where he continued his athletic career as captain of the U.S. Navy All-Star Team in 1964 and 1965, setting more track records. He competed in the decathlon at the 1964 Olympic Trials, placed in both the decathlon and pentathlon at the AAU National Championships, and was selected for the U.S. National Track Team, traveling the world to compete at the highest levels.
Bill built a successful career in real estate and became an integral part of the Atlanta community. He was a dedicated member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, a longtime member of the Capital City Club, and an active participant in Ken Boa’s Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship. He also served as past president of the Buckhead Lions Club and on the Baylor School Alumni Board and was a proud member of The Dodd Boys.
For the last six years, Cuscowilla at Lake Oconee was home—a place where Bill felt at peace, enjoying his signature slow jog and happily waving to friends around the neighborhood.
Beyond his athletic and professional achievements, Bill lived life with enthusiasm and a love for people. Those who knew him best will always remember his infectious laughter, his adventurous spirit, and his gift for sharing a good story.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie Head Ransom; his children, Lynley Poulnot (Sherrill), Lesley Curtin (Jim), William “Ellis” Ransom Jr. (Debora), Natalie Cyphers (Reinhardt), and Samuel Ransom (Amanda); and his three beautiful granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Scoggins (Leon). He was preceded in death by his sister, Gail LaBounty (Bobby).
Bill lived each day to the fullest, leaving behind a legacy of determination, warmth, and a zest for life that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In his own words:
“Let’s go get a glass of wine!”
