William “Lathan” Webb, age 98, entered his eternal rest on January 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on June 22, 1927, he was the son of Luther L. Webb and Elizabeth Cawthon Webb, both of whom preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Webb.
Lathan grew up in Birmingham and attended Phillips High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy. From 1945 to 1946, he was stationed aboard the USS Haynsworth (DD-700), where he contributed to the final chapter of World War II. For his honorable service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal—recognitions he remained deeply humbled by throughout his life.
On November 23, 1949, Lathan married the love of his life, Mary Frankie Holt. Together they built a beautiful life grounded in love, devotion, and family. Their union was blessed with one son, Don, who brought them great joy.
Following his military service, Lathan began a long career as an electrician, working with Progressive Farmer, which would later evolve into Southern Living Magazine. He was respected for his steady work ethic, willingness to help others, and quiet dependability.
Outside of work, Lathan filled his days with the things he loved most. An avid golfer, he spent countless peaceful mornings on the course. He enjoyed gardening, tending to the earth with the same patience and care he offered those around him. His talent for woodworking brought beauty and craftsmanship into the lives of family and friends—each piece created with thoughtful hands and a generous heart.
Lathan’s greatest pride, however, was his family. He is survived by his son, William Donald “Don” Webb (Darlene); his grandchildren, Luke Webb (Casey), Erin Martin (Jeff), and Jennifer Hermstein (Scott); and his cherished great grandchildren, Carter Webb and Corinne “CoCo” Webb. He is also survived by nephews David Holt, Louie Holt, Barry Holt, and Brian Holt. His beloved wife, Mary, preceded him in death, and he now rests beside her again.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Enhabit Hospice—especially nurse Megan Green—and to Linda Mitchell with Home Instead, whose compassionate care and support brought comfort and dignity in Lathan’s final days.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the Maple Room at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Ridout’s Elmwood Cemetery, where Lathan will be laid to rest beside his beloved Mary.
Lathan Webb leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. His gentle presence, steady guidance, and warm smile will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
