Obituary of Bettye Lou Lemon
Bettye Lou Lemon, age 89, passed away May 5, 2020 due to Alzheimer’s disease. Born May 22, 1930 in Tell City, Indiana, Bettye was the daughter of Alfred Wheeler and Dorothy (Kleeman) Wheeler Peckenpaugh. She graduated from Cannelton High School where she was involved in cheerleading, band and the thespian club. She then moved to Indianapolis to attend Approved University of Beauty Culture where she received her degree. Her first job was with L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis not only using her degree in cosmetology but modeled as well. Bettye was a long-time resident and business owner in Bloomington where she owned and operated Campus Beauty Salon in Crosstown Shopping Center and continued modelling. Bettye retired along with her husband, Tom Lemon, to Clermont, Florida until his passing in 1986. Betty then moved back to Bloomington to be closer to her family, including her loving grandchildren. She also returned to L.S. Ayres/Macy’s for 25 years before finally retiring at the age of 82. She lived with her daughter and caretaker for 6 ½ years, Babs Birchler, before passing away at her home. Bettye is survived by her three daughters; Debi Birchler (Chuck) Broich, of Gulfport, Florida and Barbara Anne “Babs” Birchler and Denise Delores (Larry) Sparks, both of Bloomington, one son, Phillip Owen (Debbie Bean) Bemis, of Bloomington, one step-son, Don Eugene (Carol) Bemis, of Bloomington; five grandchildren; Ashley (Jon) Williams, of Fishers, Indiana, Stacy (Ian) Wooten, of Noblesville, Indiana, Delbert Minton, of Florida, Christina (Chuck) Mullin, of Sodus, New York and Ernie Joe Bean, of Bloomington and five great-grandchildren with one on the way.
