While Howard was in the Marine Corps, he lived in Los Angeles where he met his future wife, Mary Ann (Kulbitski) Young who was there hoping to be discovered. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Young and his siblings Jane Fritch, Lawrence Young, Dorothy Morrison, Betty Kerr and Helen McDonald.
Known for the Meadow and Fountain Park jingle…Howard Young extends to you…and the phrase “Love Your Landlord”, Howard was a real estate developer and entrepreneur. He started his career in building as a stonemason working on several large structures in the state. Then, he used those skills to start building many houses in our community while attending classes at Purdue University. He built Meadow Park, Fountain Park, Barclay Square Apartments, Hyde Park Village, Tower Park, and developed the Hyde Park subdivision. Howard appreciated the friendship and loyalty of his work family, some of whom started over 40 years ago, including John and Sheila Robertson, David Arnett, Gary Robertson, John and Betty Laughlin, Noelette Henderson and many others through the years including Susie Butler and Norma Farris. He was a member of the Lions Club, Burton Woolery American Legion Post #18, Elks Lodge #446 and the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce. Howard helped found the local Homebuilders and Apartment Associations.
Howard served on the Bloomington City Council and ran for Mayor of Bloomington. He instilled the importance of civic duty and service to the community into the family as Rodney and Nancy both served on the City Council after him. He served on various local boards and commissions. He attended the First United Methodist Church. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Orr.
Howard lived an active life, enjoyed travel, scuba diving, IU athletics (he attended almost all home IU football games), horseback riding with his son Jess, water skiing and snow skiing. He loved to snow ski which he started at 50 and skied until he was 84. The family enjoyed multiple ski vacations together. Howard was Chairman of the Board of the Nick’s Lunch Bunch which he met for lunch at Nick’s English Hut daily for the past 40 years. The Young family could often be seen on Howard’s vintage ’35 fire truck for occasions such as football games, parades and weddings. Howard was the heart of the Young family.
