Obituary of Jan Jaworowski
Jan Jaworowski passed away Wednesday April 10, 2013 in Bloomington, Indiana. Jan was born March 2, 1928 in Augustow, Poland to the late Jan Leonard and Helena (Heybowicz) Jaworowski. Jan Jaworowski was an influential theoretical mathematician whose speciality was topology. He received his Ph.D. from the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1955 under the direction of the distinguished mathematician Karol Borsuk, who was a mainstay of postwar Polish Mathematics. Jan left communist Poland and, after visits to Oxford, the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton, and Cornell, joined the faculty at Indiana University as full professor in 1965. He had a long and distinguished career, publishing 64 papers over a period of 57 years, and supervising 12 Ph.D. students. His research mainly focused on equivariant topology and generalizations of the famous Borsuk-Ulam theorem, one consequence of which is that there are two antipodal points on the earth with exactly the same temperature and humidity. Jan became Professor Emeritus in 1995 but remained active after in mathematics and seminars, writing twelve papers after his "retirement." He is so deeply missed by his wife Wanda and daughter Eva. Jan is survived by his Wife, Wanda Jaworowski; Daughter, Eva (David) Martin; Granddaughter, Sophia Martin; Grandson, Andrew Martin; Nephew, Piotr; Nieces, Ania and Malgosia; Grand Nieces and Nephews, Jerzy, Adam, Tomek, Agnieszka, Asia, Wojtek, Maciek, Jas, Marek and Wiktor; Cousins, Jan and Krystyna Heybowicz; Sister-in-law, Zofia Wierzbicka. The family asks that all in attendence please wear blue.
