June 24, 1941 – January 15, 2012
David Hamilton passed away at his home following a brief illness. He is now with his savior, Jesus Christ. David sometimes known as “Joe” was bor June 24, 1941 to William Charles Hamilton and Anita Kae (Storms) Hamilton.
He was a City of Bloomington firefighter for over 33 years, rising from a first class firefighter in 1966 to Deputy Fire Chief when he retired in 2001. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School, and this structure was his first major fire he fought as a probation firefighter. Still wanting to work, and be around people, he became a Parking Enforcement Officer with the City for ten years.
A lifelong resident resident and advocate for the Bloomington community, he ran for and successfully won a bid for County Council in 1986 and held office until 2002. David was a member of the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. Bloomington Northside Exchange Club for 25 years and enjoyed helping with the annual Fish Fry and the Golf Outing that benefits youth of Monroe County. He was very involved with Bloomington Babe Ruth Baseball, serving as President from 1984-89. The only person with whom he had not made a friend was someone he had not met.
But the thing that he loved the most was being with his family, especially his wonderful grandchildren. You could always find him sitting on the side lines watching them play whatever sport was in season and attending recitals, school functions and church pageants. He loved telling people about his sons’ and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
David is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Susie, of Bloomington; brother, Dennis (Jane) Hamilton of Greenwood, IN; sons, Jeff (Alisha), Torry (Lisa), Jason (Maria) and Andy (Amy), all of Bloomington; and grandchildren, Nicholas Hamilton, Ethan and Emma Hamilton, Grace , Willa and Fennimore Hamilton, Antonio Hamilton, and Raquel, Isabel and Alejandra Roberts-Hamilton, all of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Anita Hamilton and sister, Sandra.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Northside Exchange Club or the Monroe County red Cross in David’s honor.
