Mary Frances Martin

Frances (Fran) Martin, 94, passed away on May 7th, 2025, in Bloomington, Indiana. She was born on January 24, 1931, in Jacksonville, Illinois, the daughter of Harold and Lora Swain. She spent her early years on a farm near Jacksonville. Following those years, she attended and graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority.

On May 18, 1953, she married Don Martin whom she had met while at DePauw. Don had been a student and a graduate of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, In. At the time of their marriage Don was serving in the Air Force as a troop carrier pilot and was soon sent to Japan. Fran was able to join him a few months later and they spent two and a half years there. Upon their return they came to Bloomington for Don to begin work toward a Masters Degree at IU; then they spent many years in Michigan before returning to Bloomington in 1975.

Fran was employed by the Weight Watchers organization while they resided in both Michigan and Bloomington. She volunteered for many years at the Bloomington Hospital, also volunteered with Meals on Wheels program eventually serving as co-chairman for a number of years.

She was a member of the PEO chapter sisterhood in Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don in 2016, two brothers and two sisters-in-law, son-in-law Rich Huber and a niece.

Survivors include son Bob (Beth) of Peachtree City, GA, daughter Jane Huber of Westfield, IN, Five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Per her request there will be no services. The family will be conducting a private graveside service at Valhalla Memory Gardens on May 15th. Following the graveside service there will be an open reception from 2:00pm-4:00pm at the Reception Room at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral home located at 4150 E 3rd St Bloomington, IN 47401 for any friends or relatives who wish to attend.

In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to IU Health Bloomington Hospice House or the hospice care of your choice.
