Mobie Lew McCammon

He was born in Monroe County on September 25th, 1934, to Clarence E. and Lucille (Smith) McCammon. He attended Sanders and Kirksville schools and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1952.

In 1954, he married the love of his life, Joan (Moore), and they were married 68 years before she passed in 2022. Together they raised three children, Laura J. (Nelly), Norfolk, VA., Nick (Susan), Bloomington, IN, and Luanne (Peggy), Boca Raton, FL. He had three grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, and Mikeala, and one great-grandchild, Fenris. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan, and one brother, Monty Gene.

Mobie and Joan were members of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bloomington.

He held various jobs over the years in Bloomington at Spriggs Dairy, Smith Shoes, RCA, Westinghouse, Woolery Stone Mill, Paynes Shell, Cascades IGA, and the Monroe County Community School Corporation.

He enrolled at Indiana University and ultimately finished his B.S. and M.S. with a major in Social Studies and minor in Art Education.

Upon graduating from college, Mobie was hired by Clear Creek Township as a teacher and a coach. He taught World History, US History, Art Education, and Remedial Reading.

Mobie was the head baseball coach at Smithville High School and the assistant basketball coach there. He was instrumental in building the playing fields that are still being used today, often dragging the infield with the family station wagon. Mobie enjoyed his teaching and coaching experiences at Smithville. When Smithville became a middle school, besides teaching Social Studies, he also coached the seventh and eighth-grade girls’ basketball team. When the middle school at Smithville closed, he transferred to Binford Middle School, teaching world history and coaching the seventh-grade boys' team and eighth-grade girls’ basketball team. He was then transferred to Bloomington High School South to teach in the SCAP program and later US History, and coached the ninth-grade boys' team. Later, he was named the head coach for the girls’ basketball team. He retired from Monroe County Community Schools after 29 years.

He loved hunting mushrooms, deer, grouse, quail, fishing, and was a big IU fan. He loved basketball and baseball. He served several years as a volunteer coach at Harrodsburg and Kirksville schools. He coached in the Smithville Little League and the Bloomington Babe Ruth League. He spent several years as a 4-H Club leader in Indian Creek Township. He and Joan also served several years as youth group leaders at the Walker's Chapel Methodist Church in Kirksville. More recently, he volunteered at the Monroe County History Center Library for over 10 years until mobility issues forced him to retire. He was a life member of the Indiana Genealogical Society and was a former director of the South Central District. Mobie was very active in researching and writing both his and Joan’s family history. He also compiled a pictorial history of the school in Kirksville and wrote the history of Indian Creek Township. He served one 4 year term as the Indian Creek Township trustee and was a member of the Monroe County Community School Board. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daniel Guthrie Chapter in Bedford, IN, the Society of Indiana Pioneers, and the Monroe County Retired Teachers Association.

Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
