

Sandra Sue Berndt, 75 of Bloomington died Saturday, November 7, 2015 in I.U. Health Hospice House. She was born on September 29, 1940 in Kansas City Missouri to Jess and Lucille Phelps. She was a loving and faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ and a member of Open Door Church in Bloomington. She had been a friend of Bill W. for 25 years and was very active with the Center for Women’s Ministry where she was also a Chaplain and conducted jail ministry. She owned Delta Treatment Centers, a residential treatment center for abused children and spent a lifetime counseling women and children. In her passing she donated to the Dystonia Foundation Brain Bank to help further research.
Survivors include three children, John Doane (Sheryl Ferguson) of Gladstone, MO, Kathy Baumgardner (Jeff) of Bloomington and Kurt Berndt (Lacy) of Cassville, MO; a brother R. J. Phelps (Shannon); a sister, Glenna Walton; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Tracey Shipley in 2005.
A Celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the St Paul United Methodist Church, 4201 W. 3rd Street, with Reverend Stacee Fischer Gehring officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends prior to services from 12:00 – 1:00 PM in the church. If friends so desire Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for Women’s Ministry, 1531 S Rogers ST., Bloomington, IN 47403. Day and Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
