

Sara Williams Campbell a former resident of Bloomington, IN passed away August 8th at Brookdale Senior Living retirement home in Carmel at the age of 98. She was born on March 12, 1926 in Newport, TN the daughter of Hubert Ellis Williams and Bessie Jane (Kyker) Williams.
Sara attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in May, 1943. Her early college years were spent at Mars Hill College, NC and Carson-Neuman University, TN. First jobs included bookkeeping and payroll duties. She married her husband Steve on D-Day in WWII and they were married until his death 69 years later.
During the late 1940’s and early 1950’s she spent happy years as wife and mother of a son and daughter. Returning to the job market in the 1960’s she was an elementary school secretary for 7 years in California.
In 1970 she graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, CA and subsequently taught grades 4, 5, and 6 for 20 years in Los Angeles County Schools.
After retirement, much time was spent visiting grandchildren in Indiana and Arizona. With time for volunteer work she served as a respite caregiver for Hospice, as a Bible study leader, as a facilitator in Confident Kids, and as a counselor for Crisis Pregnancy Center.
In 1996 she and her husband moved to Bloomington to be near her daughter’s family. They joined Sherwood Oaks Christian Church and participated in the Living Stones Sunday school class. Family and friends have always been her greatest joy.
Sara is survived by her sister Dorothy Williams Canipe of Georgetown, TX, her son Tom (and wife Barbara) Campbell of Littleton, CO and daughter Jane (and husband Scott) MacKenzie of Carmel, IN, nine grandchildren, and 23 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Steve, parents Hubert and Bessie, and brother Paul E. Williams.
Sara will be honored at a private family service August 16th 2024, and will be entombed at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Bloomington, IN.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
