

Shirley Leymond “Hank” Wankier, age 84, of Bloomington, died Monday morning in Bloomington Hospital. Born September 4, 1926 in Levan, Utah, he was the son of Erick and Constance Almay (Shepherd) Wankier. He was with the Bloomington Fire Department for 22 years and served as assistant fire chief for fifteen years. He also owned the Wankier Insurance Agency in Bloomington. He had formerly played semi-pro baseball and that is where he got the nickname, “Hank”, because everyone thought the announcer was calling him that, when in reality the announcer was calling him by his last name. He also served as a Patriarch, Bishop and on the High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a member of the University ward in Bloomington. He was a member of the Bloomington Firefighters Association and American Legion Post #18 in Bloomington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W.II. He was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty (Lukas) Wankier, of Bloomington; his daughter, Suzette Gilchrist, of Bloomington; one brother, Sherman Wankier, of American Fork, Utah; three granddaughters, Lisa Rodriguez, Juliet Gilchrist and Kirsten Phillips and her husband, Aaron and five great-grandchildren, Erik, Tyler, Braden, Alek and Maya. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and one sister, Cleon Wankier, Nephi Wankier, Thelma Christenson, Ernest Wankier, Clifford Wankier and Keith Wankier and his son-in-law, Kent Gilchrist.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, University Ward; 2411 E. Second St. Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery where the Veterans Honor Guard will provide military graveside rites. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday at the Church from 12 Noon until 1:40 P.M.

The family requests flowers be delivered to the church on Wednesday.
Day Funeral Home in Bloomington is in charge of arrangements.
