With family by his side, Thomas Gene Williams passed away Wednesday morning February 7, 2018, at IU Hospice House after a brief illness. Tom was the son of Edgar Gene and Joyce Ellen Williams and was born in Bloomington on February 12, 1958. He attended Bloomington High School South, where he excelled at basketball, a lifelong passion. He graduated from Indiana University in 1980. While a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity at IU, he met and added to the many lifelong friends who remained important to him – and his family – the rest of his life.
His early career in both sales and in contracts and negotiations, first for Denver’s O.J. Watson Co. and then for the Cincinnati Floor Co., helped prepare him for his work at IU. For 29 years Tom dedicated his professional career to Indiana University serving ultimately as director of construction management for the architect’s office and athletic department. He understood the importance of our humanity and was a master of bridging gaps in understanding to promote successful outcomes. Early on Tom spent time traveling to the regional campuses across the state building relationships as well as facilities. Later, his significant contributions to the ever-increasing construction demands of a growing university were recognized at all levels. Upon his retirement in April of 2017, Tom was presented Indiana University’s Distinguished Service Medal, an honor only bestowed on 25 individuals.
Tom enjoyed a wide variety of cultural pursuits, from a performance of La Boheme at the Met to a concert by the Rolling Stones at the Speedway; from dining at St. Elmo’s to a hot dog at the ballpark; and from a day trip to Brown County to ten days in England. Family always came first and was the source of his greatest pleasure – especially time with his grandson.
Tom’s family wishes to thank the many compassionate and professional individuals who cared for him during his illness including the doctors, nurses, and patient care technicians from IU Health Bloomington Hospital; the nurses, aides and volunteers at IU Hospice House and the many friends and colleagues for their outpouring of support and love.
Tom is survived by wife, Mia; daughters Meghan (Joshua) Wolff and Jaimee (Paul) Walden; sister Cynthia Moorhead; and grandson, Easton Gene Wolff. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Tom will be Sunday, February 11, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at Henke Hall of Champions, North End Zone, Indiana University Memorial Stadium, 1001 E. 17th St. Bloomington, IN 47408. A celebration of life will immediately follow the visitation. A private family service for entombment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Indiana University Foundation Memorial Gifts Fund in honor of Thomas G. Williams, to be used for student scholarships.
