

William Neil “Bill” Axsom, age 85, of Bloomington, died Wednesday at I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospice House. Born August 18, 1930 in Brown County, he was the son of Theodore Estus and Ida B. (Hanner) Axsom. He worked for R.C.A. as the manager of the Family Store for over 30 years. After retiring in 1989, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his family. He was a member of the American Legion Post #18, Bloomington Exchange Club and the McDoel Baptist Church. He and his wife were members of the Monroe County Historical Society and both served as volunteers in the Monroe County Historical Museum. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 63 years, Helen B. (Rydenbark) Axsom, of Bloomington, two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Kevin Holleman, of New Haven, IN and Tricia and Jim McCue, of Folsom, CA; three grandchildren, Madison McCue, Nathan McCue and Zachary McCue, all of Folsom, CA; two sisters, Ruth Hillenburg, of Sarasota, FL and Mary Lou Gardner, of Bloomington and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leverett Axsom and three sisters, Leona Clark, Thelma Jacobs and Iona Axsom.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E. Third St. with Doug Fry officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Monroe Veterans Honor Guard will perform military graveside rites. Friends may visit the family on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. (10/23) at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the American Cancer Society.
