William Alexander Hartfield, 77, of Bloomington, Indiana was called to eternal peace with the Lord on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospice House, after a short yet aggressive battle with cancer.
Born June 10, 1948, in Bloomington, Indiana, he was the youngest of three children to Lonnie L. and Helen P. Hartfield. He graduated in 1967 from Bloomington High School. He then went on to be of service for over 2 decades in the United States Army & at the local Army Reserve/Army National Guard Armory. During his career path, William was employed at General Electric, Wetterau Incorporated, and lastly Rogers Group, Inc. William also had an entrepreneurial spirit, entering business ventures with his friends like H&H Hauling as well as the B.G. Pollard Lodge, as many knew all too well as “The Hole.”
On August 14, 1971, he married Cecilia L. Wade, to whom he was married for 42 years, until her death in 2013. From this union one child was born, their daughter Nichole.
William was a current member of The American Legion - Burton Woolery Post #18. He carried on the legacy of his late wife Cecilia by volunteering with the Bloomington AT&T Pioneers. He was also a past member of Teamsters Local Union #135.
William resided in the same home for over 50 years and referred to as the “neighborhood watchdog.” They all looked out for each other & knew how much he loved his lawn. He will be deeply missed by so many people who have had any type of relationship with him. His hard work, dedication, smile, care, compassion, laugh, willingness to help, and sense of humor, will never be forgotten.
William leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Nichole Hartfield-Graham (Darrick) of Lawrenceville, GA; granddaughter, Jaedyn Graham (Jasmyne), who called him “Papaw” of Atlanta, GA; brother, Lonnie J. Hartfield of Bloomington, IN; Four sisters-in-law that were more like sisters: sister-in-law, Wainona Collins of Bloomington, IN; sister-in-law, Cheryl Brown of Bloomington, IN; sister-in-law, Patricia Bowers of Clinton, MI; sister-in-law, Paula Blewett of Bloomington, IN. He also leaves behind cousins along with many nieces and nephews who knew him as “Uncle Billy,” other family members, many friends & grand-dog, Simone Lia.
